Paula Gately Tillman: Fringe
New York and Atlanta, 1984 to 1997

Paula Gately Tillman’s Fringe features black and white darkroom photography that gives a rare and often never-before-seen glimpse into pivotal underground fashion, drag and music scenes, as well as other subcultures of New York and Atlanta from 1984 to 1997. Gately Tillman photographed cultural and LGBTQ icons early in their careers, such as Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey (founders of the World of Wonder); Phoebe Legere (artist); Michael Musto (Village Voice); Brant Mewborn (Rolling Stone); John Kelly (performance artist); the cast of the American Music Show; Lady Miss Kier, and Nelson Sullivan (videographer), as well as legendary drag performers, including RuPaul, Jayne County, Lady Bunny and Joey Arias. The majority of photos featured make their public debut through the artist’s first monograph, produced as a limited run of 200 artist-edition box sets, which include Fringe, a companion book Nostalgia (with ephemera and personal photos that supplement the narrative in Fringe), and a signed digital print.
