Paula Gately Tillman self portrait

I had the pleasure of meeting Paula Gately Tillman through the Canterbury Salon series she founded to present the work of emerging Baltimore artists and soon discovered Gately Tillman’s own distinguished accomplishments as a photographer. Variously based in Baltimore, New York, and Atlanta, Gately Tillman has brought a stirring sense of romanticism and integrity to her subjects, which range from portraits of fellow artists to dream-like images of Venice. We are pleased to announce The Baltimore Museum of Art’s acquisition of six vintage black-and-white photographs by the artist. The evocative works span the years 1986-1992, and document musicians, drag queens, and fashion designers of the vibrant and highly creative New York and Atlanta underground scenes. These include Ru Paul, whose developing persona and rise to pop star status, were captured by Gately Tillman’s sensitive camera-work.
